Lawn & Landscape Publishes Nationwide Top 100 List
The annual ranking of the Top 100 lawn care and landscape businesses is featured as the cover story of this month’s Lawn & Landscape magazine.
Not surprisingly, the top three states with the highest concentrations of top-grossing lawn care businesses were once again The Big 3: Texas (15), California (11) and Florida (9). The only other states with more than 5 companies on the annual Lawn & Landscape ranking were Illinois (8) and Arizona (6).
As far as the largest lawn and landscape businesses in the country, the top 3 companies on the Top 100 list are in a league of their own in terms of revenue and headcount.
Brightview Holdings (Pennsylvania), The Davey Tree Expert Company (Ohio), and TruGreen (TN), posted combined 2023 revenue of $5 billion with each company recording over $1.5 billion in annual sales. In terms of labor, the Big 3 account for over 46,000 employees.
The second tier of the largest lawn and landscape businesses in the country are the next 10 companies that posted 2023 revenue in the $300 to $600 million range followed by the third tier of 16 companies with 2023 revenue in the $100 to $300 million range.
The median 2023 revenue figure for lawn and landscape businesses on the Top 100 list was $66,500,000, and two companies actually tied for that spot. The bottom half of the ranking is generally comprised of companies making between $35 and $55 million in annual revenue.
The Largest Lawn Care & Landscape Businesses In Florida
As mentioned, Florida captured a total of 9 spots on the 2024 ranking of largest lawn care and landscaping businesses in the US by revenue. The Big 9 are spread across the Sunshine State with only one city (Orlando) serving as headquarters for two of the green giants: U.S. Lawns and Massey Services.
Bunnell-based Yellowstone was the highest ranking Florida-based business on Lawn & Landscape’s 2024 list. Yellowstone’s $579 million in revenue was good enough to earn the #4 spot on the Top 100, the same position Yellowstone occupied in 2023.
#14 Juniper posted the second-biggest jump in the ranking among Florida-based businesses moving up 5 spots from the company’s previous #19 ranking in 2023. Only Jupiter-based Impact Landscaping & Irrigation posted a bigger leap moving up 9 spots from #53 in 2023 to #44 in the 2024 ranking.
There were also three Florida newcomers to the 2024 Top 100 ranking in Tampa (Sunrise Landscape), Davie (DnyaServ), and Groveland (Cherrylake) reflecting the rapid growth of the lawn and landscape sector in Southwest Florida, South Florida and Central Florida, respectively.
In terms of revenue breakdown, 8 of the Florida Big 9 derive over 95% of their revenue from commercial jobs. Only Massey Services derived the lion’s share of 2023 revenue (87%) from residential work.
The Largest Lawn Care & Landscape Businesses In Georgia
Metro Atlanta again dominated the list for Georgia’s largest lawn care and landscape businesses on the Top 100 list. Turf Masters Brands in Fulton County claimed the highest spot (#26) followed by two Gwinnett County competitors, Russell Landscape Group (#43) and Unlimited Lawn Care (#79), and Forsyth County’s MTScapes (#82).
The four Georgia businesses on this year’s Top 100 list together account for over $250 million in annual revenue and employ over 2,200 workers in lawn care and landscaping activities statewide.
Of the four companies, only Russell Landscape Group derives 100% of revenue from commercial jobs, while Turf Masters Brands and MTScapes are almost entirely residential focused. Suwanee-based Unlimited has the most balanced service mix with residential and commercial jobs each accounting for 50% of revenue in 2023.
