Freezing Temperatures Keeping Plumbers On Speed Dial
The freezing temperatures being felt in most parts of the country are keeping the phones ringing for plumbing contractors nationwide.
Local news reports from stations as far south as Texas and Florida shine a spotlight on homeowners reaching out to their local plumbing professionals for help with frozen pipes.
The reports are eye-opening for the viewers and the individual homeowners alike who get a closer look at various construction-related causes like pipes not being properly insulated in attic spaces.
But even properly insulated pipes are freezing with the current Arctic blast which gives you an idea of the extreme cold temperatures being felt in most regions of the country.
“We’re seeing a lot of pipes that are insulated with house insulation around them still freezing,” says Dallas plumbing pro Manuel Navarrette in this CBS News Texas clip.
Florida Fire Departments Offer Prevention Tips for Homeowners
The Florida Panhandle is no stranger to frozen temperatures in the winter, and fire officials there are offering prevention tips for homeowners with 20-degree temperatures now in the forecast.
Panama City Channel 7 interviews a Fire Rescue Chief who says frozen pipes are the second most common reason for calls followed by improper use of indoor heaters.
The local fire department is preaching prevention in hopes of avoiding a repeat of last year’s freeze when they received over 100 calls in a three-day span from condo associations and businesses dealing with sprinkler pipes bursting after freezing and thawing.

“When the sprinkler pipes thaw and burst, the water would be allowed to flow into your house. And they can actually cause more damage to homes and businesses than an actual fire could cause. So protect your pipes and make sure you drip your faucets outside and possibly inside if necessary.”
Contractors Embracing New Technology
The freezing temperatures are nothing new in Wisconsin, but local news teams are reporting on new technology that is being used to combat the frozen pipes and monitor the status of jobs.
Al Holtz, the owner of Milwaukee Plumbing and Piping tells Spectrum News that there is a popular misconception among homeowners when it comes to pipe selection.
“A lot of people think copper is the best way to go for water piping, but the PEX water piping is what we would recommend to install given its flexibility and superior durability.”
The segment concludes with Al showing the new technology he uses to monitor the location of his field techs who go from job-to-job sharing their expertise with residential and commercial customers 7 days a week.
