Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration (ACHR) News just held a very informative webinar for HVAC pros which focused on 4 Ways to Make Your HVAC Business More Efficient.
Hosted by ACHR News, the one-hour presentation to ACHR subscribers and HVAC pros nationwide was made by FieldEdge’s Senior VP of Business Development, Jessie Barrack, and Business Development Manager Janet Langley.

And while the immediate focus was on HVACR business owners, the takeaways were equally relevant for any home service business owner trying to grow the business in the face of current labor and broader macroeconomic challenges.
HVAC Business Owners Share Their Single Biggest Challenge
To start the webinar, HVAC business owners on the call were asked via online poll to share their single biggest challenge in growing the business, and the results were not surprising if you read our recent post about the challenges facing glass and glazing business owners, and our earlier post this month about the challenges facing manufacturing business owners.

70% of HVAC business owners on the call said “Labor Shortage” was their number one challenge in growing the business, while 16% said “Higher Costs” and 14% said “Competitive Market” conditions were the biggest challenges to growing their HVAC business.
Hiring Challenges Facing HVAC and Home Service Business Owners
Once the poll results were in, the instructors shifted the focus to a solution: How HVAC business owners can attract and retain great employees.

In some respects, this process of marketing your business to new hires can be as challenging as writing and placing ads to attract new customers, Barrack said.
Before diving into a solution, he listed the 6 most common hiring roadblocks facing HVAC business owners and home service business owners in general:
- Hiring at the Wrong Time
- Rushing Hiring Decisions
- Dealing with Higher Costs
- Ongoing Climate Concerns
- Ongoing Labor Shortage
- Stiff Local Competition
Hiring Solutions for HVAC and Home Service Business Owners
The solution offered to these challenges is multi-faceted and begins with writing and placing better ads to attract new employees to your HVAC or home service business.
To help you with the writing portion of your ads, FieldEdge gives you a good example in the webinar of the type of content and bullet points you should be including in your online ads regardless of where you are posting them.
In order to connect with potential hires, your ads should tell them a little bit about your company, your culture, and list in bullet point fashion the reasons why someone should want to work for your HVAC or home service business.
Placing your ad is the next step in the process, and the instructors recommend an “All of the Above” approach when it comes to getting your Now Hiring message out on the following platforms:
- Job Sites: CareerBuilder, Indeed, Monster, ZipRecuriter
- Job Boards: LinkedIn, Craigslist, etc.
- Facebook: Posts, groups and job boards
- Other Social Media: Instagram, X, etc.
